We’re doing our first ever contest! So what is it? Well, chances are you probably heard about it on the podcast itself (who actually visits this website?) but in case you didn’t, here it is in written form. But first some back story.

On last week’s show (HERE) I stated in the first 10 minutes that we were looking for a graphic designer to see if our listeners were at all interested. Shortly after the episode was published I received multiple e-mails from people. I didn’t expect this. Some of you I replied to and spoke with, some of you I didn’t, and I felt bad for not responding. So I came up this contest. It is a chance for me to see everyone’s work without being hounded for specifics (because I hate giving direction when it comes to art). Now the contest.

Have graphic design skills? Ever designed a t-shirt graphic before? Artsy in any way? Here’s a chance to show your work off to a large audience. We’re asking our listeners to design a t-shirt for ArenaCast. If we pick yours, your design will be seen everywhere on our website (as it will most likely become our official logo) and once LAN events start occurring more often, we’ll sport your design there on a hoodie or t-shirt for everyone to see. Also, there’s a chance we might bring you on as our graphic designer.

Design Criteria

ArenaCast must be somewhere on the design, easy to see and easy to read

Design can be anything, as long as it is appropriate to wear in public. No racism, cursing, or explicit images – something you would feel comfortable wearing.

Our motto, “The Home of WoW E-Sports”, can be included but is not necessary

E-mail submissions to jp@arenacast.net with the subject “T-Shirt Contest” with contact information if you do not check your e-mail very often.

All submissions must be .jpg format. Resolution is your choice, but chances are if you win I’ll probably ask for a higher resolution image.

Other then these rules, anything goes. Impress us. Think of it as something you’d include in your portfolio.

The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2009. Once all submissions have been collected, I will make a post with all of the designs for the public to see. We will choose the winner a week later and announce it on the show.

Instead of just posting pictures of each of us I figured I’d bring back this video from BlizzCon. The first ever video (and hopefully not last, coming soon! -maybe-) of us. Igoaf, oplaid, myself (JP), and Vhell are all on the video. I find it funny that we’ve come full circle with the Koreans doing so poorly at BlizzCon and then winning ESL Finals. This was back when WLD was king, and RMP was on the rise (pre 3.0). See below!

Just for good measure, here’s a picture of everyone’s favorite ArenaCaster Kint; he’s so happy with vhell:

Below you can find our two, three to five hour streams during ESL. The first night is only recorded about halfway through. The second one is right at the start (but we have no intro, didnt expect these to be recorded).

I had planned to cut these up and put them on youtube over the ESL videos but recording them in real time with a what-u-hear codec was too taxing on my computer due to the audio files in audacity being over 8gb. If anyone wants to cut them up etc then feel free — my PC cant edit 8gb audio files with a quickness. Embeds after the jump. Enjoy!

Arena fanatics around the world rejoiced this past month when Blizzard finally announced the Tournament Realm registration and competition.

The Past

If you have had any interesting in majorly competitive WoW Arenas in the past year, you no doubt realize both the scope and success of Blizzard’s initial 2008 Tournament Realm. From its inception, many Arena criticizers cited the fact that you had to “grind” gear from honor marks/points etc. People did not enjoy the fact that if you wanted to wake up one random morning and go PvP with a friend, if he wasn’t in full Season x gear due to a/b/c reasons, there was no point in playing. Similarly, it became too hard making sure that you had an account with the perfect race/class/faction set up, not to mention on the same server as your teammates AND decent competition.

To solve all of the noted problems and create a buzz for the official Blizzard tournament, Blizzard decided to put out a pay-to-play server just for Arena activities. People were able to pay a small fee ($20 one time, if I remember correctly) and create any race/class/faction combination that they wanted to. This opened up a whole new avenue of possibilities for teams to practice.

And on February 17th, Blizzard once again decided to bring happiness back to the masses with the reintroduction of the 2009 Tournament Realm.

The Present

So, why should you care that the Tournament Realm is back? To put it bluntly; it’s the best chance you’ve got to practice and you should take advantage of it as soon as possible. For each individual, there are more than a handful of different and applicable reasons that would (should?) entice you to singing up and participating in the Tournament realm. However, as this is supposed to cover the general user base, I will most definitely be applying said reasons to as many of our potential readers as possible.

Teams and opponents: you are able to play with whomever, whenever, against whomever you’d like to. Other than continental differences (obviously), there aren’t dozens of different servers to choose from. No matter where you’re rolling on the TR, you can play with your friends against some extremely high caliber opponents who are interested in taking Arenas just as seriously as you are. If they pitched in x amount of dollars/time to get into the TR, then you know that they’re interested in actual practice (ideally, anyways.)

Opportunity cost: You’re giving up the best chance you’ll have at being noticed and getting meaningful practice by not participating in the TR. You have not only the opportunity of seeing how well you fare against teams who are already known, but you have the opportunity of succeeding against them and having it genuinely mean something. I’m not guaranteeing instant celebrity status or sponsorship here, but being able to claim a top x spot on the TR is at least somewhat credible. (Note: depending on how cynical the individuals are this time around, people may call it the “fluke of the 3.x patch” but who knows.)

Free reign: You have the ability to choose your precise arena composition concerning faction, class and race. Rarely does this happen on live servers as finding two teammates who are a) both skilled enough and b) have the right combination of class and faction is a pretty selective process. However, on the TR you obviously don’t have to worry about this. Not liking how your team is dealing with fears? Switch over and make your classes Undead. Having problem with snares? Roll some Gnomes! Want to be completely useless? Toss yourself a Blood Elf! Effectively, you finally get to be the kid in the candy store you’ve always wanted to be.

The Future:

The one question that I still have yet to have a definite answer on is: what do you want changed for the future? We’ve already been through one successful Tournament Realm, and there were definitely improvements that could have/should have been made. Now we’re entering the era of TR 2 and I’d really like to take a look at what happens at the end and reflect on it. We have the chance to make our voice heard, in a personal sense as BlizzCon ’09 is in the near future, and we could definitely try to set up one on one time with a PvP/eSports designer.

Do you have any comments about the way the TR is handled? Do you not like the procedures, or is there something missing that you hope to see in the future? Let us know in the comments!

Death Knights have been a hot topic for quite some time now. People are looking to 3.1 to balance out some of the dumb shit currently in the game. This is PTR and it is the time to get things changed but holy hell these numbers seem to be a little over the top.

It appears a lot of things are far from complete, but if this is a sign of things to come arena may become even more skewed than before. What if Blizzard has decided to take a more intense approach to the damage in arena issue?

http://thottbot.com/test/s61860

The above link shows that Blizzard may be toying around with the idea of reducing damage in arena through an aura effect instead of taking it to a class by class basis. This is pure speculation, but do you think this is a necessary step?

World of Warcraft began as a PvE game and will always keep it as a core element. Is it possible to balance this game with an avenue in e-sports in sight? Some sort of game changing rule set upon entering an arena may be the only way to truly balance it in the end, but it is up to Blizzard to make that decision and only time will tell which will always be captivated in the simple word of soon.

I’m having issues with my hunter being copied over, but I will post a few quick notes about the class before the show if able. Look for this week’s show to have plenty of talk about the new things to come in the wonderful World of Warcraft arena scene.

This list of classes looks to be quite outdated as it’s safe to assume there will at least be one Death Knight at the tournament considering Kill E A recently dropped out of the EM Finals recently because that class is so overpowered!

The compositions are a relic of the qualifying round at the end of last year and start of this year, so expect things to be a lot different in Germany. X6tence has practiced extensively with Hunter, Paladin, Death Knight and other teams like SK are known to have played with the new class, so don’t think the tournament will play like a relic from the past. In fact, Jay “2GD” Harding of ESL TV stated on today’s ArenaCast that the class list is “what the team’s want others to think they’re running” and not what we’ll actually see at the event.

As for who to expect on top, it’s always a safe bet to go with experience, so Nihilum Plasma, x6tence.AMD, and SK Gaming seem like locks to advance. Even so, this will be the first LAN tournament ever for Wrath of the Lich King, so anything can and probably will happen in such a volatile metagame.

Expect more updates on ArenaCast.net as information becomes available leading up to the Extreme Masters final!

In an unexpected move, runner ups at the Continental Finals Asia WoW, Kill E A, have opted to sit for the upcoming finals in Hannover for ESL Global finals. Filling their spot? SK-Gaming Asia, formerly Council of Mages.

On the ESL tournament page Sang-Yeol ‘miracle’ Lee of Kill E A had this to say on the topic:

“Upon consultation with my teammates, we have regretfully decided that we will have to withdraw our participation from the tournament.
Due to recent balance changes resulting from the 3.0.9 patch, we believe that it is no longer possible for the Mage and Rogue character classes to remain competitive in a high-level PvP setting.

In addition, our testing has shown that it is now impossible for other classes to compete effectively with the Death Knight. As the Mage and Rogue remain integral to our teams’ strategy, and because we do not have a member prepared for competitive play with the Death Knight class, we have decided to withdraw our participation from all competitions for the time being until these imbalance issues are rectified.

Please accept our sincerest apologies.”

Min-Sik ‘reis’ Ko of Sk-Gaming added:

“We are really happy about this opportunity. This event is going to be awesome because SK got all three WoW teams there and the Korean guys are really excited about going to Germany. They are well prepared right now so I think we will see some really exciting matches in Hannover!

My prediction is 1st – 3rd place – all SK! ;)”

I find it a little hard to believe a team like Kill E A would just bow out of a tournament finals. I think that Rogue / Mage are still viable — look at CompLexity. What do you guys think?

Registration for this year’s tournament has officially opened, the items that will be available have been listed (HERE) and now it’s time to wait for the servers to actually come up. The initial challenge a player will face on the tournament realm will be deciding just what the hell to equip in terms of gear.

At first glance, everyone should notice NO 226 ITEMS IN SIGHT! No Betrayer, Sinister Revenge and Envoy should make physical damage come down a bit while every caster gets to do their own celebratory dance. Healers that have chosen to use Ice Living Crystals on live are sure to be unhappy as well. Trinkets have always had a huge impact in tournament play which goes back to warlocks and their Void Star Talismans so why should it be any different this time around?

Death Knights should be happy to see their ever loved Bandit’s Insignia is available. Darkmoon Cards, Grim Toll and Soul of the Dead are a few of the many good trinkets we’re sure to see in this year’s tournament. One other thing to remember when choosing trinkets is that humans will have the ability to use two trinkets while taking full advantage of their racial ability. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of human Death Knight’s wearing both a Bandit’s Insignia and a Darkmoon Card: Greatness as they continue their never ending quest for big numbers.

No engineering means goggles and rocket boots are no more which could have an impact on some players. The loss of other professions will have a very small impact on various character stats. The greatest loss of all is that there is no crab pet listed. Tournament action must of been too much for the poor bastards and they called it quits.

The most exciting part of the tournament realm for most is to see the game on an equal footing. No player will have access to additional gear outside of what Blizzard has made available. Class composition, skill and a splash of RNG, which we all know and love, will be the only deciding factors on the tournament realm. Are you prepared?

For all you death knights I released a “rune addon” a few days ago. I’ve spent a great deal of time making it extremely flexible and customizable. Special thanks to Serennia for being a testing slave and a factory of ideas. It wouldn’t be where it is today without him. Since it’s unrelated to arena I’ll be keeping it on WoWAce/Curse so leave feedback on its addon page. (link after the jump)

Link: Acherus Runes – Addons – Curse

Upcoming features to Overhead
- Aura tracking ON the nameplates probably like Gladius’ style.
- SpellAlerter type alerts over the nameplate
- Compact mode. Basically I’ll add a toggle to remove the border art (takes up the most space), remove level text, and relocate the name inside the bar.

I don’t intend to make Overhead into a giant super customizable nameplate mod such as Aloft.

Here’s a rough outline of what the arenacast macro addon will look like. Ten class icons and a general icon on the top edge. Clicking one of them will load the names and descriptions into the table below. Clicking on one of the entries int he table will load the text into a text box which you can copy paste from. If you want more in the macro addon post in the comments.

As usual, the euros break the news first, and the 2009 Tournament Realm has been announced. Detailed rules haven’t been released yet, but according to this forum post, signups begin Feb. 17th.

In an interesting move, Blizzard has gone away from the two seperate qualifiers they had this season, and instead will invite the top 1000 teams to a one week invitational ladder, following the six week long open competition. In true WoTLK fashion, players who participate in the TR will receive not only an Armored Murloc vanity pet, but also a sleek “Vanquisher” title for their live characters.

It remains to be seen whether or not the TR will actually begin the 17th, but from the looks of it, patch 3.1 will hit mid TR. Thats….. pretty typical, and creates a whole host of balancing issues (as if there weren’t enough already). Regardless, I’m sure a lot of people are excited about the announcement! Be sure to tune-in to the show tomorrow for an in depth discussion on the announcement, and what it means to the scene.

I’ve been diagnosed by myself as having a case of the WoW blues. What are the WoW blues you say?

The WoW Blues
- noun
1. medical condition of being extremely bored with the game, resulting in massive amounts of Defense of the Ancients being played and/or losing in 2v2 Warcraft 3.
2. involves immediately lack of interest in the game, emoness, and all around qq’ing with anything related to the game.
3. constant bickering on game mechanics, overpowered arcane mages, rogues, and ret paladins.
4. retelling of stories to people who will listen about events occurring in ranked matches
5. nagging of professional WoW players on how to beat certain comps

Last night we played 3s and 5s. As with every other time we try to play, some team from past seasons begins to start queuing. Last night in particular a team who earned Brutal Gladiator in 5s decided to play 3s running the Survival Hunter / Mage / Shaman comp. I’ve never really played against the composition and from last nights experiences, I hope I don’t ever have to again. But enough bitching… wait, what am I saying, thats all this article is about.

Raiding once a night every week was fun at first. Now every Friday (yeah, Friday, I don’t go out much, easy food for the trolls) I lead the alt raid for Void, my guild on Mugthol. Running these raids has become something I dread and several constants that raid with us each week are beginning to drop one-by-one. PvE is once again boring and I’ve been fairly resistant to this, many other raiding guilds fell victim to being bored after the second week.

The ESL Finals cannot come fast enough. WoW needs something to rejuvenate this stagnant feel to it at the moment. Patch 3.1 changes posting now on MMO-Champion are great for discussion, but you can only talk so much. We need a tournament to watch. And after that, well, we have to wait until June it looks like for MLG. Another dry spell. Oh dear.

I’ve got to go back to actually working now on the school newspaper (OMGNERD). Hopefully I can find a cure for these blues because as it stands now, I don’t want to log in for a while. Anyone else feel like they have a case of the blues?

The important things to know for WoW fans are available tidbits of information but it takes a little digging around the MLG website to find.

The best news is that the first tournament of the year will be in Columbus on June 5th-7th with registration opening in early May. Whether that registration day means anything to the WoW public, though, is another story.

There are a bunch of details hidden in the competitor FAQ which you can find hidden on the Pro Circuit website if you select Columbus.

Right now, the tournament is slated to be invite only with a maximum of 12 teams able to compete at each event. Much like past seasons of MLG in Halo and Gears of War, the top 8 teams at each tournament will receive “Pro Circuit Rank Points” that will determine seedings at every event with a cumulative running total with the top 4 ranked teams receiving a bye into the bracket stage of the tournament. The 8 remaining teams will battle through a group stage, labeled “Pool Play,” with 4 of those advancing to battle the top seeds.

Right now, it’s unclear how invites will be determined and how the Columbus tournament will be seeded.

It’s possible last year’s results could become a factor in the selection process, but that could be an unpopular choice as EG’s Conrad “Zyz” Lope pointed out last night on ArenaCast – last year has little bearing on how strong teams are this season after the multitude of changes in Wrath.

An MLG Tournament Realm could come into play, considering the ESL Realm seems to be just around the corner. Ladder play, though, has proven unreliable in producing an adequate competitor list if the number of advancing teams is small like the 12 required for MLG. Also, it provides no adequate way of providing replacement teams should a roster break up during the course of the MLG season.

Prize money is another issue sure to rattle the competitive community.

1st $9,000
2nd $4,500
3rd $2,250

The bad news is Glick won’t be able to complete his super computer since HP Blackbirds are no loner in the equation. Or maybe that’s the good news? Overall, there will be about $15,000 given away at each event with the victors pocketing $9,000. The big difference, though, comes at the National Championships.

This time, World of Warcraft actually WILL have a National Championships unlike last season’s three stand alone events. The reward for it, though, isn’t too grand. Only the top FOUR teams, based off MLG rank points cumulatively tallied from placements throughout the year, will be able to compete at the final, and only the #1 team will take home any money – $15,000.

That’s a far cry from the six figures afforded the top Halo team, but I suppose it’s nice that they’re holding a WoW Championship at all, considering they didn’t think it’s something worth actually publicly announcing…

Hi, Kollektiv here. I’m going to be creating mods designed specifically towards arena which will only be available here. If you use some of my current mods they will be moved off Curse and WoWInterface in the near future to here. Got a feature request or suggestion? Post a comment!

There have been a lot of requests for a mod that hides totems/pet nameplates and show casting bars on every nameplate in arena. Subsequently mod makers have said it’s impossible. Well it turns out to be possible and I will now be releasing it as a mod called Overhead. Currently it has two simple features

Hides non-player nameplates in arena (totems, pets, mirror images, etc) and Note: The nameplates aren’t actually hidden, just the art is so you’ll still see them shuffle around if they’re clustered

Displays castbars on all enemy nameplates regardless of target selection.

It’s highly recommended to uninstall other nameplate mods (ie Aloft). Find the link at the bottom of this post. Special thanks to Kassay for the idea.

Only works in arenas!

Enjoy!

I know after you saw that amazing title JP gave my “work space” here at Arenacast that you began expecting big things, and I am here to begin delivering.

One of the biggest issues with World of Warcraft when compared to other games in the e-sports scene is that there isn’t any form of demos available to the public outside of the occasional PvP video. When trying to remedy that very problem, I found myself faced with the big question: what would a WoW demo include?

On this first rough draft of Arenacast’s demo we take a look at a specific arena composition and just talk about talent choices, gear choices and general tactics. After banging my head against the wall trying to get the video to a point where I even felt comfortable uploading it, the guys here at Arenacast came up with a great idea. We have decided to release the video in its roughest stage to try to get your feedback and mold it into exactly what you guys want to see and hear using your suggestions.

First, let me warn you that this video is not fancy in any way. One of the first things we will be doing is getting a much better intro for the video, maybe even in the form of song and dance, so it looks much less like something my nine year old cousin could produce. Second, I know the quality (both audio and video) aren’t that great which is completely my fault and something easily fixed with a little more time.

Now here’s the part where I would like the Arenacast community to come in and help push this along to be a great addition to not only the website, but a great resource for anyone looking to find more information about arenas in general. The basic idea is to grab footage of top players running the most popular compositions out there and to discuss the comp over the footage. Would you like for us to get more in depth with the videos? Be more specific with comp vs comp strategies instead of a whole overview of the comp? For instance, we didn’t really talk about when you want to use your big cooldowns like wyvern, strangulate and HoP against certain teams.

Another idea was to do the general overview of the composition and afterwords do specific videos with footage versus some of the other tougher comps out there and go in depth with strategy and where to use cooldowns basically creating a tutorial over a short period of time.

The whole idea is for this project to be an enjoyable resource of information for all of you. So please, leave any feedback or suggestions in this article, and I hope to have a more polished, maybe even halfway good, version out soon.

CompCast1.wmv

Known issues soon to be fixed:

- Title of the project itself (CompCast) is pretty bad. Ideas?

- Intro is bad

- Audio and video quality are bad

- Credits say #gamesurge instead of #arenacast, are too small and bad

- JP Edit: The end part just wasn’t nice making fun of the great and wonderful JP.

Man, this sounds like an awful plug. But the real reason to watch the show (duh) is because they’re calling me about 1:30 p.m. CST to discuss the three new American WoW teams and also some things about ArenaCast. I’m just afraid that I’m going to be charged a billion dollars on my phone. Here’s hoping I’m not!

First and foremost, I need to make an apology to anyone and everyone who read my first article here on ArenaCast. When JP first asked me if I was interested in writing for this website, I immediately realized what an opportunity it was. He explained to me the overarching themes and concepts, and most importantly the ideals, of what he has begun to orchestrate with this website. I was immediately excited to begin planning and organizing all of the ideas that had been brewing in my consciousness for quite some time, but never quite had the venue to display said ideas.

Sure, there were obviously other websites that I could submit my content to. However, I would have either been driven out by trolls or overwhelmed by the amount of other content, so I was as enthusiastic as could be about making my first post a hit. I wanted something to write that was a genuinely helpful insight into what I believed to be the most important factor in the WoW Arena setting. Yet, because this was a new frontier for me, I also wanted to try something I had never tried before when writing an article.

I tried for the sarcasm approach, and it very obviously fell completely on its face. You see… if you knew me in real life, or in game, or from any aspect – you would know that the previous article is completely the opposite of everything that I stand for and anything I have ever written. Those two facts right there are the sole reason I even contemplated writing it in such a sarcastic voice, and why I felt it might just work as an interesting post. The entire point of it was that it was completely harsh, ridiculously critical, and barely helpful: if you could get past the thick skin, however…there was supposed to be the nugget of information that would be another breadcrumb onto your way to improving your game.

From the reaction I have seen, both from the staff here at ArenaCast and the folks who read and responded to the article, I was not even close. People mistook me for an honest troll, and someone set out to prove just how much better I am than those who “dropped low enough to read a website.” That was not my intention at all, and I sincerely hope that (if you read the last article and are reading this one) you are willing to give me another chance.

Why Multitasking?

Even though 99 percent of the replies to the previous article were bashing me, there were also some comments slipped in about how I was wrong. If there was anything I learned from the schooling I’ve received, it is that constructive criticism is one of the most important steps to success. So, with that being said, I do still believe that multitasking is the most important, but not the only valuable skill in Arenas.

Being able to juggle all of the incoming and outgoing information is easily the most difficult part of this game. Sure, there are reaction times when trying to interrupt a spell, or strategies that must be memorized before a match, but none of that is helpful if you’re unable to realize WHEN those things become useful. For instance, being able to gauge the cooldowns and timers of your opposing team, the positions of you and your teammate(s) as well as your opponents, and even the environment (ala pillars on the Orgrimmar Arena) will allow you to determine just how important the counter-spell would be, versus saving it for later and instead strafing behind a pillar.

In the same vein, multitasking is not only the key to surviving, but also being able to call out a burst at the perfect moment. There are quite a handful of different variables to consider, including but not limited to: opponents defensive trinket/out/cooldown usage, teammates offensive cooldowns, possible LoS issues (bridge in Blade’s Edge, pillars in Nagrand), and most importantly the relative health/mana of each enemy player. Calling the burst at the wrong moment, which is inherently easy due to the massive amounts of opportunities to be “the wrong moment” will lead to a failed kill, most likely leading to your defeat.

Hey! Other things are important too.

Obviously, there are aspects of playing this game that are vastly more important than others. Understanding the strengths and weakness of your class/comp against every single other class/comp is of supreme importance. Knowing the spec/gear that is required to find the right glass canon: solid brick wall ratio is also a key aspect of the meta game that is WoW Arena. Do you know the strategies of your opponents, the immediate specs and gear (PvE vs. PvP pieces), and even the little details such as they’re good and bad maps?

All of these are critical components to victory, and play a huge part in your eventual success or failure as each individual match go. However, it is of my personal opinion that your biggest gain can and will come from improving your ability to multitask. Looking back at some of my favorite matches and videos, coming from the former-GotGameEast-now-Complexity teams, Evil Geniuses and Council of Mages members, I can see plain as day when HappyMinti or Azael would call for a burst/save and actually pull it off in a move that could be seen as divine guidance. Absolutely fascinating to me, but perhaps you have a better counter argument to prove me wrong?

Critical Criticism

Yet, I am just one member of a community of avid World of Warcraft players and fans. I am not some incredible being of omnipotence, and I don’t have all of the answers. I am more than willing to listen to anyone who believes I’m wrong or just have the details and focus in the wrong place. Feel free to comment about any of that, or even if you think I’m absolutely dead on and have even more examples of why, please make some sort of a comment! This is, as I said before, a community, and I’d genuinely appreciate some discussion on the matter – intelligent discussion that actually progresses the idea and theory, not just belittles it.
